EXCLUSIVE RELEASE EXCERPT:

“What are we doing here?” Lucia asked.
“Just keep quiet,” John replied. “I’ve got some business to handle. I knew that you were wanting to chat and see me, or whatever, but I still have work to do all the same. Turn cheek like Dad always told you to do, and we’ll be fine.”
Lucia chose not to respond to her brother on that front. “Working, working?”
“I don’t have any other job, Lucy. I’m a Capo, and nothing more.”
Great.
John parked the Mercedes in front of a shoddy apartment building. He repeated to her to stay put and leave the car locked until he came back. Then, he climbed out of the car, and Lucia watched him disappear into the building. Less than ten minutes later, her brother emerged from the building with a black duffle bag in hand. John unlocked the car and tossed the bag to the back.
Once he was settled back into the driver’s seat, he said, “Just ask.”
Lucia peered into the back seat. “What is in that bag?”
“A couple of things.”
“Like what?”
“Money and substance.”
“Um …”
“Coke,” her brother clarified. “I need to pick up some stuff and hand it off to the people who run with it. Do you understand?”
“Not really.”
John shook his head. “Then stop asking.”
Lucia could do that.
“I have a couple of more pickups to do before I can take you back. Is that okay?”
“Perfect, John.”
Her brother pulled out of the parking space. “Good.”
For the next hour, Lucia sat quietly in the car while her brother did whatever it was he did. He often disappeared in and out of buildings with his black bag in hand, and no one ever passed him a second look. Apparently three years in prison really wasn’t affecting her brother’s ability to do his job.
Sticking a spoonful of a hot fudge sundae in her mouth as John drove through what looked to be a park of some sorts, Lucia noticed a group of older kids hanging around a convenience store. Well, she didn’t think they were kids, but they were probably around her age or a little older.
John parked his car and beeped the horn once. He flashed his lights twice. Confused, Lucia watched as an older boy broke away from the group and approached John’s car.  Since the sky was starting to darken, she really couldn’t see the guy’s face all that well. But the closer he came to John’s window, Lucia had a far better view of him.
Sharp, strong lines shaped the man’s face. Wild black hair, like he’d been tugging on the ends, hung down to his eyes. Dark russet eyes peered into John’s opened window, finding Lucia instantly, while the guy’s lips pulled into a cocky smirk.
Lucia glanced away.
“Hey, Ren,” John greeted.
Ren.
Lucia took the guy’s name in, and chanced another look at him. He wasn’t looking at her anymore, but instead, focusing on John.
“Skip,” Ren said.
“You got anything for me today?”
“Always, boss.”
Ren’s hand disappeared inside his coat before he pulled out a white envelope. It passed into John’s hand like nothing was amiss. John opened it up, counted the cash that was inside quickly, and then handed over a stack to the man. Then, Lucia’s brother tossed the envelope onto the backseat.
“Go see, Tucker,” John said. “He’ll get you set up for next week for whatever you need.”
“Will do, Skip.”
Ren’s hand hit the top of the car, but before he turned away, he shot Lucia another look. Lucia fidgeted in her seat as her brother took notice of the stare that was passing between the two.
“Ren,” John snapped.
Clearly, her brother was not playing around today. He’d never been one for boys being around Lucia, anyway.
“Sorry, Skip,” Ren said. “I’m going. Next week?”
“Yeah. Get gone, kid.”
John was backing up before Ren had even moved away.
Once they were back on the road, Lucia’s curiosity ate away at her.
“John?”
“What?” her brother asked.
“Who was that?”
“Renzo?”
Lucia would recognize an Italian name anywhere.
“Yeah, him,” she said.
“A street kid,” John informed like it was nothing. “A soldier who probably isn’t going anywhere but right where he is. It sucks, but that’s how it goes.”
Lucia picked at her manicured nails, still curious. “Why?”
“Because that’s what his father did for our father, and his grandfather for our grandfather. It’s a circle, Lucia. It’s vicious. It’s the kind of life they can’t get out of even though they try damned hard. What does it matter?”
She didn’t really know.
“Just wondering,” Lucia settled on saying.
John’s gaze cut in her direction before he said, “Keep wondering. Nothing more.”
“Huh?”
“Stay away from guys like Renzo, Lucia.”
“I didn’t even say—”
“Take it as future advice,” John interrupted. “Remember it.”
She would try.

Synopsis

Baker Corinna Freeman cut all ties with Colby Hunt when she learned what the handsome military officer really thought about her and her cooking skills. She walked away; heartbroken, pride in tatters, keeping secrets she was far too young to shoulder.
Now, a decade later, Corinna’s reputation is legendary — both in and out of the kitchen. This bold woman is determined to live life to its fullest while she can.

There’s just one major problem...

Colby’s suddenly turning up everywhere acting as if nothing has changed between them in the last ten years. It infuriates her because he can still stir her up.

Colby Hunt never understood why Corinna walked out of his life without a word. He’s not letting this chance pass to figure out what happened with the voluptuous beauty who captured his heart. Despite his anger, he’s never really let her go.

But there’s something she’s hiding...

Unlike Corinna’s perfect cakes, secrets fall apart. When they do, they will test the strength and courage of not only Corinna and Colby but the entire Freeman family.

Excerpt

Finally, when she faces me, her face is devoid of the fiery emotion I saw captured on Holly’s camera. “What do you think so far?”
“Of what?” Of our conversation? I think it fucking sucks.
“Of the cake. A teenage football player for the Tigers was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Caught in time, thank God. His parents called because tomorrow’s his birthday. Kids at RHS have been decorating the rocks at Lake Mamanasco in tribute since he was diagnosed. The parents sent me a bunch of pictures. I’m trying to recreate it.” She gestures to the photos blown up and taped to the walls.
I’m intrigued by the idea and blown away by the talent of the woman in front of me. She’s not just decorating a cake; she’s creating a memory. “You were always so brilliant at this,” I murmur as I step forward to get a closer look at the cake and the images.
“At what?” Corinna casually wipes her gloved hands on her pants before she reaches for a bottle of water. Taking a large drink, she lowers the volume on the music.
“Capturing the essence of life in your art. You bring life to things all around you, Cori.” I turn to find her shaking her head at me. A vile look takes over her face.
“Corinna, if you please. Cori is reserved for the people closest to me. People who actually give a shit.” Corinna’s voice is filled with loathing.
I’d be lying if I didn’t admit how shaken I am at the vitriol in her voice. I step toward her, expecting her to retreat the way she always did back at school. But Corinna holds her ground. “You know that’s not true,” I grit out.
I care. I’ve always cared too damn much.
“Right.” Her drawl is pronounced, taunting me to break through her shell. I want to throw something to break through because I know better.
This heartless woman isn’t my Corinna.
Abruptly, I turn and face the graffiti images taped to the walls. They’re vulgar in their beauty, denouncing the disease that racked this man/child. Words jump out at me, like loyalty, forever, light, and love. In what some would consider the destruction of something beautiful, something even more precious was built. I’ll never understand how, but these kids made it happen. If they can do it, then so can Corinna and I. We can resolve whatever issues we have between us to get back what we had. Because I don’t think I can live without her in my life.
Without turning, I ask, “How much longer will this take you tonight?” I look over my shoulder to see Corinna loading up an airbrush with an almost ink-like substance. Food coloring, I surmise. Knowing the damage she’s done in the past when pissed off and wielding it, I have little doubt she’ll fling it at me if she’s angered enough. I turn back to face the artwork. Loyalty jumps out again at me. For some reason, that word makes my jaw tick.
Where was her loyalty for us?
“At least another six hours,” she says, matter-of-factly.
“Jesus Christ, Corinna!” I turn fully, food color explosion be damned. “That will put you here after midnight. Alone.”
“I’m a big girl, Colby. This isn’t the first time I’ve done this,” she retorts. I don’t miss her subtle emphasis on the word ‘big’. My eyes drop inadvertently to her luscious breasts. She’s big all right. In all the perfect places. She always has been.
Shaking her head in disgust, she mutters, “If this wasn’t the last of this color…”
I can feel the heat climb up the back of my neck. “You’ve always been a knockout,” I admit.
The snort that leaves her lips is full of disdain. “Oh, please. Give me a fucking break and just go. I don’t have time to deal with this.” She waves her hand toward the back door, dismissing me, queen to a peasant.
I might have left her without trying to climb over her walls, but I need for her to know. “I saw you the other day.”
“Unfortunately, I see you a lot these days. You’re going to have to be more specific than that.”
Taking a deep breath, I step closer to the table where she’s just capped off the air gun. I place one hand on top of hers, forcing her to lower it down to the table. Infuriated mud-brown eyes lift up to mine. “Corinna, I had to get a CT scan on my shoulder for work,”
Any antagonism in her features leeches from her face. “No,” she whispers. Her eyes hold mine for a few more seconds before they start darting around the room. Everywhere but at me.
“Yes.” I capture her chin to hold her face steady. “What happened?”
“Nothing you need to worry about,” she immediately responds, trying to yank her face away. I apply the smallest amount of pressure and she stills.
“It’s serious enough to have a sibling-only dinner though? Isn’t it?” My hand leaves her jaw and trails down her neck to trace her collarbone. “Why keep everyone else out?”
“Maybe I want to introduce them to someone,” she snaps waspishly. Corinna has never dealt well with being backed into a corner.
“Princess, the only man you’re ever going to introduce them to like that is me. And it’s high time we both stop playing games and admit it.” I wait for her reaction to my admission of the attraction that’s always simmered between us. The attraction that even her sisters have recently slammed in my face.
It’s not the one I expect.
Corinna stomps over to the back door and flings it open. I’m surprised the crash doesn’t shatter the glass. “After everything you did to me? After everything you said? Do you really think…of course you do! All you fucking men think you need to do is snap your fingers and any woman will drop their panties at your feet. Guess what—not this woman. Not anymore. Now get the fuck out of my kitchen before I tell the rest of the family what actually happened all those years ago to make me hate you as much as I do.”
I’m frozen in shock. Of all the things I expected, this was the very last on the list.
“Now!” she screams.
Woodenly, I move toward her. Her face is turned away. “Corinna,” I whisper imploringly.
“I am not kidding in the slightest. Get. Out.”

She’s one of the last free humans. On the run… And running out of time.
Laina Roberts has been on the run for ten years, a freeborn human hiding from the cyborgs of the Silver Legion who now controls what’s left of humanity. Moving secretly from planet to planet and space station to space station makes for a damn lonely life—and don’t even get her started on how long it’s been since she last had sex. Sometimes she thinks it might be worth turning herself in to the cyborgs just to end the loneliness. That is, until she’s caught!

Captured by a hot-as-hell Legion officer, the cyborg Ronan makes her think being probed by him might not be so bad. But becoming a cyborg’s slave—sex or otherwise—isn’t high on her to-do list. She doesn’t trust him and doesn’t understand his constant questions about Earth—especially those about her long-dead relatives. Ronan can just kiss her ass—oh yes, please—because she is not going to let her desires or his incredibly perfect body weaken her resolve. She now has a new mission, to convince the cyborgs and the rest of the galaxy that all Terrans, humans and synthetic humans like cyborgs, have the right to be free.

If only he didn’t make her feel like melting into his arms and never leaving. Being captured by a cyborg might not be so bad after all…

Excerpt

“Get up, freeborn.”
The bark of his order made the woman flinch, and she began to unwind, as though forcing herself to relax. Her body uncurled, and she pushed herself into a sitting position, wiping dust from her face and hair. She looked helpless. How ironic, given what her ancestors had done to him and his kind.
Her lovely gray eyes—yes, even he could admit that much about them—shone like the hull of the Orion. Pure. Beautiful. When her gaze finally settled on his face, her eyes darkened. Like the Scar on Jupiter, they clouded and churned.
“You.” She let out a whisper, only audible to him. She shoved herself to her feet and wobbled unsteadily before regaining her balance. Did she recognize him?
“Under the regulations of the Sol Patriation Act as set forth by order of the Galactic High Council, you are hereby detained by the Silver Legion. You will be returned to Terran space, where you will spend the rest of your days in the service of the Terran Colony Fleet. Ensign, restrain her.”
The moment Julian took a step toward her, she swung a fist at him. He easily caught her wrist and twisted it until her legs buckled, and she fell to her knees at his feet with a cry of pain.
“Why did you think that would work?” Julian asked.
The woman gasped, face still ravaged with the pain of his tight hold.
He leaned in closer, anger growing. “I’ve been fighting tougher opponents than you for three hundred years. I once took down a gorg with my bare hands. Why did you think such a feeble attack would succeed?”
The woman shut her eyes, wincing with pain as she took a deep breath.
“Answer me, freeborn,” Julian demanded, gripping her more forcefully.
Ronan was about to tell Julian to stand down when she struck, driving her other fist into Julian’s groin. He cursed as he released her. The woman dove past a shocked Alanna and ran for the door. Ronan aimed his pulse gun and fired, striking her between the shoulders. She went down hard, head smacking into the floor.
The control room went silent, except for the electric drone of computers, as Ronan walked over to the unconscious woman. A cut above her left eye from where she’d hit the floor was dripping blood onto the deck.
An emotion wormed its way to his chest. Pity. He pitied this woman. She was so frail, so breakable, like the rest of her doomed people. And yet she was brave enough to evade him and his team, even if the attempt was ultimately futile. It was a pity that freeborns had so many failings. It ruined the few strengths they had.
Ronan knelt and slid one arm behind her back and one behind her knees to lift her up in his arms. He carried her body to his chest and walked back to Alanna and Julian.
“Have the boarding party return to the ship,” he said to Alanna. “Notify the commander that we are returning to the Orion.” He then looked at the Nubran captain. “We have acquired your ‘stowaway,’ Captain. I have no further interest in your vessel. You may resume your course.”
Zore nodded, carrying a mixture of relief and sadness. “Thank you.” Her eyes strayed to the human’s face. “Please, don’t go hard on her. She is a nice person. Always polite. Worked hard. She never caused any trouble.”
Julian groaned. “I beg to differ.”
Zore frowned, her amber eyes darkening. “You would have done the same in her position. Any one of us would.”
“What’s your point, Captain?” Ronan asked in irritation.
“My point is that she is undeserving of whatever fate you have in store for her. I would think, coming from a race once persecuted like they are now, you would be more merciful.”
The Nubran’s words were bold and unafraid, her determination to stand up for the freeborn an unexpected turn. Ronan couldn’t help but wonder what hold this female had over Zore that she would risk her life and the lives of her crew.
“They receive all the mercy they deserve,” said Julian.
Zore’s head dropped, and she looked away. “You have the law on your side, and I have complied, but if you cannot see that justice must be tempered with wisdom, then there is nothing left to discuss. I will thank you to leave my ship in peace.”
“As you wish. Safe journey, Captain.” Ronan nodded to his subordinates, who flanked him as he left the control room and returned to the Orion, his prisoner still in his arms.
Commander Alaric Corvus stood waiting for them on the other end of the airlock. His eyes zeroed in on the prisoner.
“So, you were right. You did see a woman on board,” Alaric mused. At two meters in height, he was slightly taller than Ronan, but he held an air of command about him that made him seem more solemn than the rest of the crew. A silver star sat on both of his epaulets, but with his service record he could easily have three if he desired. He was one of the first cyborgs to command a warship, and one of the leaders of the Cyborg Rebellion three hundred years ago.
“She gave us a bit of trouble.” Ronan tilted the body in his arms so the woman’s head rolled away from his chest and toward the commander. The wound above her eyes had caked and clotted.
“Doctor, we need you,” Alaric called over his shoulder. A woman appeared from the group that had gathered around the airlock. Dr. Valeria Schedar was the Orion’s chief medical officer. She wore the uniform of the Legion, only with a silver caduceus on her shoulders instead of a rank insignia. Her long blonde hair was pulled back at the nape of her neck and bound with a strap.
“Minor head trauma… Stunned with a pulse gun, I take it?” Valeria reached to take the woman’s body from Ronan.
He felt a strange urge keep her in his arms. Valeria looked up at Ronan and sensed his reluctance. Her lips curved in a soft, understanding smile.
“She won’t require a stretcher. Bring her to the infirmary. I still have to tend to her wounds.” Valeria headed for the sickbay, and Ronan followed. He felt his commander’s eyes on his back the entire way. He wasn’t behaving abnormally, was he?
The sickbay was a large room with multiple beds and various medical instruments. Though the cyborgs on board could regenerate from most injuries quickly without aid, the majority of the crew were synths, and as such they required more traditional care.
“Where should I put her?” Ronan asked, looking at the multiple beds. None of them looked particularly comfortable to him.
Valeria waved at the room as she searched for her instruments. “Anywhere is fine.”
The metal surface of the nearest medical exam table gleamed in the artificial light, looking cold and hard. Ronan had no desire to place the woman on that.
“Do you have something to lay on the bed to cushion her?”
Valeria chuckled. “Haven’t you been here since the refit?”
“I rarely need to come here.”
“Just lay her down and press the panel next to the bed, where it says ‘New Patient.’”
Ronan did so. As soon as he pressed the button, what he’d assumed was a metal surface slowly ballooned out, raising her up a few centimeters and cushioning her on all sides, raising her head up to a natural resting position.
“Elysian design,” the doctor said matter-of-factly. “Customizes the bed to the patient’s body, plus provides readings of basic body functions.” She pointed to the diagnostics panel above her head, which now lit up with her heart rate, pulse, and brain activity.
“I should have guessed.”
“Well, as you said, you rarely need to come here.”
Ronan’s attention returned to the prisoner. His fingers threaded through her hair. The chestnut strands felt like watered silk. A frisson of pleasure went through him, and he felt a surge of reluctant tenderness for her. That tenderness quickly turned to anger, then into something else. He pictured her looking at him not with fear but desire, and that desire being returned in kind. What would he do if…?
“Ronan?”
He blinked, Valeria’s call jarring him back. He shook his head and controlled himself. “What?” His hands were still deep in the soft coils of the freeborn’s hair. He freed his hand of the strands that clung to his fingers.
“You can daydream inappropriately on your own time, not mine. I need to wake her.” Valeria cleaned the prisoner’s head wound and covered the cut with a clear cream, which disappeared as it was absorbed. “She probably has a concussion. I need to make sure she didn’t suffer from any other injuries during her journey, and for that I’ll need to wake her.”
“Fine. Do it.” He waited as the doctor injected her with a serum that would pull the prisoner back into consciousness.
The woman’s lashes fluttered, and then her gray eyes, fogged with pain and confusion, locked onto his and held.
“You,” she gasped. Again she’d said that.
“Me,” he agreed. He forced himself to scowl, though part of him found her bewilderment amusing. But she was not a source of humor. Despite how she appeared, she was the enemy. He could never forget that.

About the Author (Noah)

Noah Chinn was born in Oshawa, Ontario, and has never really forgiven it for that. After high school he fled his hometown in favour of the freezing winters of Ottawa. Three years later it dawned on him that higher education and frostbite did not have to go hand in hand, and finished his degree in Toronto.
Shortly after university he moved to Vancouver, where he met his future wife, Gillian. He then spent the summer bicycling across Canada, which she thankfully didn't misinterpret as him trying to get as far away from her as possible. They moved to Japan for three years, where he taught English yet managed not to learn a word of Japanese.

It was during this time that he had a successful cartoon series called Fuzzy Knights, which centered on the exploits of toy animals playing Dungeons and Dragons, and an evil hamster trying to destroy them. Some have called this a cry for help.

He later moved to England with dreams of making it big as a writer - because with a BA in English Lit it was either that or serving fries at a burger shack. Noah's first serious attempt at a novel, The Professional Tourist, was set in a Tokyo language school. Unstable students (and teachers), biker gangs, and the homeless underworld of the Blue Village all featured in this slightly askew romantic comedy.

The book landed him an agent, but not a publisher. Unfortunately, in the way aspiring actors move to Hollywood and end up as busboys, the closest he came to literary success in England was working at several bookstores - each of which mysteriously closed down after his stay.

After writing several more manuscripts and moving back to Canada, he found more success in the North American market. He and his wife now live in Vancouver.

He now wears a hat.
